Port 24 Consulting is leading the charge in AI Agents innovation in South Africa — Durban, Cape Town, Johannesburg

How Port 24 Consulting is investing in local AI models and POPIA-aligned infrastructure so customer data never leaves the country.

Innovation in AI is not just about model quality. For South African operators, it is also about where the data lives, who can see it, and whether the architecture stands up to POPIA scrutiny. Port 24 Consulting is investing heavily in both sides of that equation.

On the model side, we are actively working with locally hosted and open-weight models that can be deployed inside South African infrastructure. That means voice and WhatsApp agents that respond with low latency to local callers, understand South African accents and code-switching, and do not depend on a round-trip to a server on another continent for every utterance.

On the data side, our default posture is that customer data does not leave the country. Transcripts, recordings, personal information and operational metadata are kept inside South African boundaries wherever the deployment allows. We design pipelines so that the sensitive surface — names, ID numbers, account references, waybill numbers — is handled with POPIA obligations front of mind, not retrofitted afterwards.

We treat POPIA compliance as an engineering problem, not a paperwork exercise. That includes data minimisation in prompts, retention controls on transcripts, role-based access to call logs, and clear records of processing for the operators we work with. Where local hosting is required, we build for it. Where cross-border processing is acceptable, we document it properly.

Innovation, for us, means the hard work: running local models at production quality, hardening the data path, and giving South African operators an AI option that does not force them to compromise on residency or compliance.
